Family Book Group

Come join the Family Book Group! We focus on picture books to spark anti-racist work with our young families. Geared towards pre-k through grade 2, (but all siblings are welcome!) our book choices and conversations will build towards how we, as families, can engage in more anti-racist reflection, conversations and actions. Sign up here!

Please share this opportunity!

11/20 Sunday, 3:30-4:30 (We’re Different, We’re the Same)/ (Max and the Tag-Along Moon)

12/3 Saturday, 3:30-4:30 (The Name Jar)

12/10 Saturday, 3:30-4:30 (Something Happened in Our Town)

A packet of all 4 books can be reserved for the first 20 families who email the Head of Circulation, Meghan Balbresky at balbreskym@cwmars.org. After you register, I will email you as soon as you can pick them up at the Harvard Public Library. Look at the pictures, read with your kids/fellow caregivers as you can. If you’d like, watch a Youtube read-aloud linked below for another experience with the story.

Family Book Group is hosted by Elizabeth Brown, white mom to 4 biracial kids. I’m figuring out how to engage in anti-racist work as a human and as a parent, expecting feedback and growth to be part of my journey.

Max and the Tag-Along Moon, by Floyd Cooper

  • When Max leaves his grandfather's house, the moon follows him all the way home, just as Grandpa promised it would.

We’re Different, We’re the Same, by Bobbi Jane Kates

  • Illustrations and simple rhyming text show that while the body parts of various human and Muppet characters may look different, they have similar uses.

The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi

  • After Unhei moves from Korea to the United States, her new classmates help her decide what her name should be.

Something Happened in Our Town by Marianne Celano

  • After discussing the police shooting of a local Black man with their families, Emma and Josh know how to treat a new student who looks and speaks differently than his classmates.
